Four basic steps for a human risk assessment (HRA):
• Identification of problems/issues
• Hazard assessment
• Exposure assessment
• Risk characterisation

Some knowledge on toxicology or ecotoxicology is important. You may have plenty time to do detailed study on toxicology. However, neither HRA nor ERA needs really detailed toxicology investigation I THINK. You can use empirical toxicological data for the assessment.
