Hi Steve, You'd better start preparation 2-3 years before scholarship tests. Starting coaching from 3 year olds may be too early. However nowadays private schools offer scholarships from early years in primary schools. There is advantage to start early because year 3, 4 or 5 entry scholarship test is less competitive than year 7 entry. If you start preparation early, the coaching has to be fun. You can use the following books to coach them at home: Maths made easy (year 3) Maths made Easy (years 3&4) Maths made Easy (years 4) English made easy (year 3) English made Easy (years 3&4) English made Easy (years 4) You can find these books at http://bettereducation.com.au/books/melbourne/ScholarshipBooks.aspx

Just be careful about rote learning. When kids are too young and not ready they will try to memorise and it is not fun for them. Only when they understand they would enjoy learning. The other thing is to put emphasis in problem solving, not memorising the rules. Kids who know the rules but cannot use them to solve problems will not succeed in anything at all.

Between now and the first week of March, there will be much dodging and much gloating at the school gates. The great 11-plus showdown is entering its denouement. From today, letters go out from grammar and private schools to say whose progeny has won the race for the most prestigious places. There’s no doubt that in the multiple choice of life, the first big test for many comes if their parents decide to try to push them into a selective school at the age of 11. This year, it is more brutal than ever. Recession has driven more middle-class parents towards the few remaining grammar schools, and those willing to pay want to pay only for the best. Anywhere there are pockets of middle-class parents with even a nod to Tiger Mother-ish tendencies becomes a bloody battlefield. High School Diploma online

Your daughter can sit scholarship tests for year 5 entrance in 2013. Many private schools offer scholarships which begin in years 4, 5 or 6. You do need to choose particular schools. See more information at http://bettereducation.com.au/Resources/ScholarshipTests.aspx. Please find the schools and primary school scholarship test dates via: http://bettereducation.com.au/Scholarship/ScholarshipTestDate.aspx (look for PSP) http://bettereducation.com.au/Scholarship/EduTestDate.aspx
