When to use a pointer to a pointer?

When a pointer is passed to a function, it is passed by value. The function may modify the local pointer to reference something else, but the original pointer is not affected. To pass the pointer by reference so that the function modifies the original pointer, we need to use a pointer to a pointer, eg. char** ppMyString.
